The Omaha Public School District wanted to replace an existing aging inner city elementary school with a proto-type school designed by our firm. The site for the new school, adjacent to the existing school, had contained a battery-processing plant. Due to lead contamination, the existing plant was demolished and extensive site remediation was required. This building was designed with a media center at the core of the facility with a multimedia distribution system networked to all learning areas. All entries are equipped with card readers for security. Noise control features were utilized to positively affect the learning environment and interior materials selected to create a calm learning environment. Interior classrooms and rest rooms were designed as tornado shelters.
